Tower of Power is a horn-based funk/soul band from Oakland, California. In the mid-1960s, 17-year-old tenor saxophonist Emilio Castillo moved from Detroit, Michigan, to Fremont, California.

The phrase “Funky Christmas” has been used to describe many aspects of the holiday season. Like a lot of other words in the English language, the word “funky” can take on various meanings, depending on how it’s used, both negatively as well as positive.
The first time I really listened to Tower of Power is when the self-styled funky kingpins of R&B, Mick Sterling and the Stud Brothers, introduced me to them when the Studs covered maybe six or seven Tower of Power songs during their sets on Sunday nights at Bunkers in the 1990s.
Given the overwhelming appeal, it was only natural to take the show on the road with City Winery in Chicago also being the subject of considerable demand with four full-fledged sell outs.
