Akinmusire has lately been composing more and working with string quartets and genre-bending singers such as Theo Bleckmann and Cold Specks.
Leading a quartet of like-minded musicians who prefer subtlety over noise and delicacy over bombast, Akinmusire presented solos of sustained creativity and invention.
Akinmusire the prizewinning 33-year-old musician from California and one of the most expressive and articulate trumpeters in any kind of contemporary music is on a two-night stopover at the Pizza Express Jazz Club with his long-running quartet.
Initially a protege of the saxophonist and rhythmic innovator Steve Coleman Ambrose Akinmusire Quintet has enjoyed an extraordinarily rapid ascent to the highest level of international jazz performance.
With his hyper-talented and youthful quintet the 29-year-old Californian delivered a set in Bristol that rang all the changes from the soft and lyrical to high-energy heat.
For this short tour Akinmusire's group is supported by British pianist Robert Mitchell's idiom-twisting and rhythmically needle-sharp trio 3iO so the whole package amounts to an absorbing insight into the international state of jazz's cutting edge.
