Ezra Collective is a five-piece from London (Femi Koleoso - Drums, TJ Koleoso - Bass, Joe Armon-Jones - Keys, Dylan Jones - Trumpet and James Mollison - Saxophone). They "marry the delicate technicalities of jazz musicianship with afrobeat and hip hop".
I count myself as blessed right now. As a lifelong jazz-head, I have lived through those years when the genre was mocked as being pretentious and exclusive to a select few beard-twiddling individuals – see The Mighty Boosh for starters.
If I were asked to describe Ezra Collective’s London show in one word, I would probably say “joy”. The show was technically sold out twice: originally planned at the O2 Academy Brixton, it eventually took place 24 February at Eventim Apollo in Hammersmith.
It is significant that the bass arrives on stage first, starts playing and the drums follow. It is only once the rhythm section is in place that the other three arrive (keys, trumpet and sax).
