The amphitheatre lights faded to black, and there was a stillness in the night; the canned music stopped playing; a murmur sounding like the drone of traffic on the Interstate emanated from the crowd as people shuffled as best they could in tight confines, inching nearer to the stage.
The Dead South, the four piece from Regina Saskatchewan Canada, whose high energy take on bluegrass has won them deserved plaudits, are back on the road and on Wednesday night they played to a packed Rock City.
A sold-out, disproportionately bearded crowd had to hoedown on the spot – there was certainly no room to square dance – during Canadian bluegrass innovators The Dead South's debut Adelaide show (21 March) in support of their latest release, 2024's 'Chains & Stakes'.
Their 2022 Easy Listening for Jerks LPs saw the Canadian quartet bless System of a Down, The Misfits and Cold War Kids material with folk and bluegrass infusions. Furthermore, based on the reaction to the first song, "Tiny Wooden Box", dropped from their forthcoming LP Chains & Stakes, the best is yet to come.
