Barker’s album “A Dark Murmuration of Words” has received favourable reviews and been called “an album of spare, striking beauty” by Mojo. Barker and Drinkwater treat us to a number of tracks off the album tonight.
The previous evening the highly talented Canadian singer-songwriter Leif Vollebekk had been in town; an artist whose only fault is that he talks too much. It’s a pity he didn’t hang around another day to watch Emily Barker demonstrate how to put on a show.
Though Barker’s songs themselves are typical in the genres of country folk and Americana, her performance as a singer and multi-instrumentalist makes for a truly special live gig, filling the Borderline with some Australian warmth on this cold wintry evening.
Beautiful setting and decent acoustics aside in any other venue the generally obscured viewing uncomfortable pews and limit of one lavatory per gender would devastate TripAdvisor with a flood of one-star reviews.
