Originally founded as a skiffle group in Liverpool in 1959 by John McNally and Mike Pender (Mike Prendergast), the band took their name from the classic 1956 John Wayne western The Searchers. Prendergast claims that the name was his idea, but McNally ascribes it to 'Big Ron' Woodbridge, their first lead singer.

The Searchers performing at The Lowdham Village Hall Nottinghamshire on Friday 6th January 2017
There may be only one local lad left, but this was still home ground for Merseybeat’s No 2 act. The audience, mainly contemporaries of 70-somethings John McNally and Frank Allen, wanted a knees-up. And that’s still the script, as the jangle-pop pioneers hosted their two-hour perusal of their catalogue.
