Critic Consensus
Based on 11 concert reviews, the critic consensus is that Billy Cobham is rated as an impressive live performer, with enjoyable shows overall. Billy Cobham concert reviews describe live shows and performances as noisy, exciting, and incredible.
Billy Cobham, born May 16, 1944 in Panama, is one of the world's most influential drummers, best known for his jazz fusion in the 1970s, with John McLaughlin's Mahavishnu Orchestra, where he pioneered a powerful style of drumming with jazz, rock and funk influences. He is the first drummer to unseat Buddy Rich in the Down Beat music polls.
The Jazz Cafe has always played host to incredible jazz acts, but to combine arguably the greatest fusion drummer of all time with one the most exciting upcoming bands is a big feat, even for this historical venue.
The Mahavishnu Orchestra which he co-founded with guitarist John McLaughlin had just disbanded ex-employer Miles Davis was becoming ever more cryptic and a multitude of lesser talents were awash with self-indulgence.
Drummer-led bands can be noisy affairs devoted to the antics of stars, but despite being one of the most revered drummers of the past half-century and a founder-member of John McLaughlin's pioneering Mahavishnu Orchestra, Billy Cobham doesn't hog the spotlight.
