Ornette Coleman's visits to these shores have always been remarkable events, featuring collaborations with bagpipers, rappers, opera singers, orchestras and – at 2009's Meltdown festival – Patti Smith, Flea and the Roots.
It was the climax of a fantastic programme of entertainment curated by the man himself and it deserved the 15-minute standing ovation and continued applause that followed.
The warmth shown by Toronto for one of the icons of 20th century music was in evidence for the entire evening and spoke volumes for the personal connection many have to him through his music.
