Dirty Projectors‘ joint tour with Deerhunter finally came to the 9:30 Club for a fulfilling night recently — both bands are no strangers to DC. Dirty Projectors had just played last summer 2018 for their latest album Lamp Lit Prose.
To be honest, while I have always appreciated them technically, even their most lauded studio recordings have never really hit home with me, but seeing them perform live put their catalogue in a whole new context. They don't need to rely on studio trickery.
There was a time when a double bill of Brooklyn pop weirdos Dirty Projectors and Atlanta dream-pop shredders Deerhunter would pack a building twice the size of the 1,400-capacity Roseland.
However, it was clear from their performance earlier this summer at both Governors Ball and Public Arts that the lineup had undergone some serious changes, with only bassist Nat Baldwin and drummer Mike Johnson returning to the band.
