Della Mae is an American bluegrass band formed in Boston, Massachusetts, in 2009 by Kimber Ludiker, Amanda Kowalski, Grace van't Hof, and Avril Smith. Their name, "Della Mae" comes from the song "Big Spike Hammer.
At the end of a recent show at The Birchmere, everyone on stage — except for mandolin player Tristan Scroggins, who his bandmates call “Mr. Sadie” (playing on the band’s name, Sister Sadie) — was a woman.
Della Mae puts a fresh spin on bluegrass. In a genre traditionally characterized by a high lonesome sound, this Grammy-nominated lineup of all female dynamos is unlike anyone else.
Alejandro Escovedo changed the show at Music Box Supper Club from being backed by The Sensitive Boys to a combo consisting of longtime associates lead guitarist Bill Masters and cello maestro Brian Standefer.
Country certainly was in far more evidence throughout the set, but it's bluegrass that remains the defining sound of Della Mae, which just released its second self-titled disc.
