A notorious homebody, Chad VanGaalen is well known for rarely leaving his rickety house in Calgary, endlessly drawing, recording and making art. With Diaper Island, VanGaalen distills his approach, producing his most sonically cohesive album to date, and the closest thing he has done to a rock album.
Seeing the physical individual whose imagination is so readily able to transcend beyond the obvious and pedestrian reality of the world was in no way a disappointment.
That sentiment was backed up by much of his onstage chatter which tended to focus on anything but the matter at hand — performing for the sun-baked afternoon crowd.
Notoriously housebound renaissance man Chad VanGaalen, despite his unaffected charm and easy stage presence, gives me the impression he’s probably happiest tinkering away like a mad scientist in a basement full of arcane musical toys.
