Amadou and Mariam are a musical duo from Mali, composed of the couple Mariam Doumbia (vocals) (born in Mali's capital Bamako 15 April 1958) and Amadou Bagayoko (guitar and vocals) (born in Bamako 24 October 1954).
One of those lovely crowds that you sometimes get at Concorde 2, where people of all types had gathered out of a sheer love of the music, streamed in to utterly fill the venue, each one beaming and expectant.
With a back-catalogue of 20 years, they brought an effervescent, empowering and thought-provoking set to Concorde 2, made up of their brilliant fusion of disco, funk and traditional Mali music.
A little backstory: Amadou Bagayoko and Mariam Doumbia both met at Mali’s Institute for the Young Blind, performing in the Eclipse Orchestra, married in 1980 and began recording music together in 1983.
