The Shins are an American indie rock band centered around James Mercer. The band formed in 1997, in Albuquerque, New Mexico, United States as a side project of Mercer (previously of Blue Roof Dinner) and drummer Jesse Sandoval, who were both members of Flake Music.

The Shins celebrated the 21st anniversary of their debut album, Oh Inverted World, at Chicago Theatre on Thursday, September 8. The project, which was released in 2001, showcased a pensive wistfulness that the Alburquerque facet specialize in.
The world was a different place twenty years ago and it was still possible that a more or less unknown indie rock band from the Pacific Northwest could drop an album that would become part of the cultural lexicon for the next decade.
