Voivod are a progressive thrash metal band from Jonquiere, Quebec, Canada, with a very distinct sound. Formed by Denis "Piggy" D'Amour, Michel "Away" Langevin and Jean-Yves "Blacky" Theriault in 1982, the fledging group soon found the perfect singer in Denis "Snake" Belanger.
Considering that Voivod won for their 14th album and in their 37th year — long after they've been globally recognized as one of the world's premiere prog metal bands and are legends in their own right — makes all this mainstream cred seems a bit after the fact, if not downright hilarious.
The Montreal Jazz Festival is known for straying off jazz music’s beaten path with an eclectic mix of music genres. However, this was the first time I’ve heard thrash at the annual event.
