The Church is an alternative rock band which formed in Sydney, Australia in 1980. Initially linked in with neo-psychedelia acts of the period, their music later became largely defined by the interplay of guitarists Marty Willson-Piper and Peter Koppes coupled with the abstract lyrics of bassist/singer Steve Kilbey.

There's a floaty hum hanging in the air at The Tivoli in Brisbane, like everyone knows exactly what kind of music miracles The Church can manifest and they're dead keen for the rite of set one to commence.
While waiting for the doors to open, a genuinely curious stranger in their mid-20s approached to ask me if the line-up to the venue was for a church. He'd inquired along the line and heard 'church' each time.
With Marty Willson-Piper's disappearance into the ether and the final departure of Peter Koppes, Steve Kilbey effectively is The Church, gradually having surrounded himself by a supporting cast of more than capable players.
