Shovels & Rope is American folk duo of husband and wife Michael Trent and Cary Ann Hearst from Charleston, South Carolina. The duo began with two guitars, a junkyard drum kit (harvested from an actual garbage heap- adorned with tamborines, flowers and kitchen rags), a handful of harmonicas, voices, and above all.

When a husband and wife can work together at what they love and make a living from it, that is a supreme blessing. Michael Trent and Cary Ann Heart were leading separate musical careers when they met, fell in love, married, recorded music together, and toured the national music circuit as Shovels & Rope.
So much of the best music has been the result of human relationships gone wrong, gone right or our infinite quest to understand our own needs and desires.
Charleston, South Carolina folk-and-country-rock duo Shovels & Rope opened the annual Wheels of Soul tour recently. Married couple Carrie Ann Hearst and Michael Trent were the first of three heads of the beast that invades Wolf Trap every July.
There are so many things I want to say about my time at An Evening with Shovels & Rope on March 6 at The State Room, but I’m sure I won’t be able to properly convey the complete experience here.
