Ninja Tune jazz heavyweight Mr Scruff (Andy Carthy) launched into his DJ set with groove-riddled funk house and disco.

Admittedly the situation in South London at the moment probably isn't quite as bad as that of the crack-ridden Big Apple in the 70s, we are living in an age of a divided nature, intolerance and hate crime.

When Mr Scruff says he's doing a 5 hour DJ set… he's doing a 5 hour DJ set! The reason for the frankly piss poor turn out at 9pm when doors opened must be down to the fact that people must have thought he would start later or there would be a support act.

As we draw ever closer to its closure, The Kazimier seems, ironically, to be more alive than it’s ever been. Its swan song is a chorus that sounds titanic.

Following in the footsteps of the likes of DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist, who in previous years brought the good vibes to the gardens, the Ninja Tune signee had no trouble packing out the open-air venue.
