Matthew and the Atlas is an English alternative folk outfit based around musician Matthew Hegarty. Having played and recorded as a five piece band since early 2010, Hegarty also tours with a stripped-back set up.
A series of EP’s and two critically-praised albums (including last year’s Temple) have slowly built a reputation for heart-felt anthems that seem to live in the twilight, melancholy of mood without ever becoming maudlin.
At Dingwalls in Camden they seem to mix a full array of different influences: Matthew Hegarty’s voice is sometimes surprisingly similar to Collins’ vocals while the guitarist every now and then bursts out in strands reminiscent of Foals’ early sound.
Last year they featured on a beautiful little gem entitled ‘Share More Air’, a collaboration between professional songsters and juvenile lyricists from the Ministry of Stories.
