The scene was set for something slightly special as I descended the stairs towards the wood panelled bar at Cecil Sharp house this evening. The weather had turned the wind was starting to kick up and there was an air of expectation amongst the small crowd.
While maybe not quite reaching those heady heights, this was a performance that continued to establish Smith as one of the giants of the modern folk genre.
How can a John Smith stand out? A few have managed it – the man who led the Labour Party in the early 1990s immediately springs to mind not to mention the Yorkshire beer – but historically John Smiths are barely noticeable.
