The 28th annual Woody Guthrie Folk Festival got under way in Okemah, Oklahoma this past Wednesday, July 9th with a truly memorable evening featuring Hayes Carll and Evan Felker along with Sarah Lee Guthrie at the Crystal Theatre.
Hayes Carll and Corb Lund hadn’t played a concert together since 2018, but they came to the Bijou Theater in Knoxville, Tennessee for their “Bible on the Dash” tour, which was simply a set of swapping songs, telling stories and good vibes. “I met Corb at a poker game in Dauphin, Manitoba,” Carll said.
I’ve seen Hayes Carll several times. I’ve seen the Band of Heathens several times. Both always put on great shows, but together? Hayes and the Heathens put on one of the best shows I have seen in a while. The performance was dynamic and electrifying.
Hayes Carll is in a pretty good place right now. His new album ‘What It Is' is a triumphant return to form following two releases which some considered somewhat flat.
