On Friday night at Carriageworks, Ella Mai returned to Vivid Sydney not as an emerging R&B star or a Grammy-winning hitmaker, but as an artist finally comfortable in her own skin.
Over the past three weeks VIVID LIVE has offered so many incredible and unique live performances that have left audiences in awe. Wrapping up the 2023 season at the Sydney Opera House, Ella Mai delivered one of the most compelling shows of the festival with her soulful and fierce taste of RNB.
She could probably have her pick of superstar collaborators, though a promise of “something special” in the second half turned out to be a teary hug on stage with her mum. It was a touching moment, but she was on safer ground with the delirious rendition of Trip.
