Bedouin Soundclash was only a few songs into its Galaxy Theatre performance late Friday night when Sekou Lumumba did a long drum solo amid National Water, from debut disc Root Fire.

The name is deceptive, suggesting some ghastly conflation of incompatible ethnic musics in the vein of Afro Celt Soundsystem, hybridised in the hellish conviviality of the global village and sanctioned by Peter Gabriel. By rights, Bedouin Soundclash should be an ethno-fusion spoof dreamed up by Chris Morris.

Not that there's anything wrong with that, especially considering how forthcoming Malinowski's been about his influences.
