Middle age comes for us all. Patrick Wolf, the former musical wunderkind, came to Portland to play for the first time in 13 years, a fact he repeated in wonder and despair throughout his masterful concert at McMenamins Mission Theater. Wolf thrilled a small but appreciative crowd to not only songs from his new album,
With just three songs performed from his 2003 Lycanthropy album and all of the six songs from his two 2023 releases, The Night Safari EP and new single "Penzance", allowed himself to be wide open to examination, making it impossible for any error to have any space to run to, let alone hide in.
Whereas his early offerings were a gloriously eccentric blend of folk and glitchy electronica, his recent releases have seen him edging ever closer to mainstream pop.
