Last Tuesday night, Donald Trump delivered the first State of the Union address of his second term. Two nights later, James McMurtry took the stage at The Ram’s Head in Annapolis and provided his own, far more unvarnished take on the state of the nation.
All three were in abundant evidence during his annual late summer/early fall tour of the East Coast, where he performed a series of dates with fellow Austin musician and collaborator Betty Soo.
James McMurtry may look like he never smiles but he is funny as hell. Over the course of a nearly two-hour set at the Aladdin Theater, the Texas-born singer-songwriter regaled a sold-out audience with music spanning the length of his 34-year career.
